Research & Development Manager, NHS Highland
Remote and Rural Health

I am an OHN member as I believe research that includes any aspect of health is bound to be of interest to the NHS from the perspective of patients and staff, but also because the landscape and remote and rural nature of the Highland region gives special opportunities as well as special challenges to health professionals and to patients seeking a more healthy lifestyle. As R&D Manager for NHS Highland, I believe that I can contribute directly to research strategy, methodology and output.

I am the R&D Manager for NHS Highland and in this role administer and guide all research and development actvities for all NHS related projects in Highland. This includes R&D projects that originate in NHS Highland, in academic institutions based in and outwith Highland, and projects funded by commercial organisations. I thus have an overview of all types of health related research from clinical trials in cancer, diabetes, renal medicine and other areas, to qualitative studies being carried out by nurses in remote areas, from consultant led multi-centre studies, to MSc student research, and including development activities such as the commercialisation of products.

Previous to this post I was the Research Manager of the ESRC funded Centre for Business Relationships Accountability Sustainability and Society (BRASS) at Cardiff University, which I was instrumental in setting up between Cardiff Business School, Cardiff Law School and the School of City and Regional Planning. The Centre focused on all aspects of sustainability and environment as they pertained to society and to business. My own research included work on sustainable communities, social enterprise, environmental and sustainability management, waste management, the electronics industry and other areas. I was manager of 40 staff, and involved in developing the strategic approach of the Centre, as well as bringing in a total of £1.2 million in research funding for separate projects (from ESRC, Defra, BERR, Environment Agency and others) during my last year in this post. I have a publications list that includes journal articles, conference papers, book chapters and reports.
