Emma White

Emma White is an environmental psychologist working at the University of Surrey, exploring the relationship between people and their physical environment. She is currently working as part of the ESRC Research Group on Lifestyles, Values and Environment (RESOLVE), a multidisciplinary collaboration aiming to provide robust, evidence-based advice to policy-makers who are seeking to understand and influence the behaviours and practices of 'energy consumers'. Emma graduated with a Master’s in environmental psychology at the University of Surrey in 2008, receiving a distinction for her thesis examining the perceptions of green roofs and façades. Prior to this, in 2007, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree with honours in psychology with biological sciences from the University of Edinburgh. With a family background of horticulture, and being a keen gardener with an allotment herself, she has a particular interest in the importance of greenery and elements of nature within the urban environment.

Life History Project

Oral history is “the recording of people's memories. It is the living history of everyone's unique life experiences” which “enables people who have been hidden from history to be heard” (Oral History Society, 2008). The life history approach is a branch of oral history which aims to examine events and experiences from right across the lifespan. It has the potential to provide incredibly rich data which can help us to understand the link between individual experience and the influence of historical events. Emma is currently working on a one-year project examining food practices across the lifespan using the life histories approach, which aims to understand: Why people do what they do; What conditions encourage change; The societal context at the time of change.
