Epidemiology/Environmental Science
I am a research fellow with the European Centre for Environment and Human Health in Truro. We are developing a programme of research on a wide range of aspects of how the environment and human health are intertwined. A key strand of our research is on the positive health benefits of the natural environment. The Outdoors and Health Network is an excellent opportunity for us to develop collaborative research in this area, and to produce findings that can directly inform environment and health policy and decision making. One of the major elements of our research in this area is the preventive and therapeutic benefits of coastal and inland aquatic environments ('bluespace') for health and wellbeing. We are also interested in how consideration of human health benefits can promote environmental protection and improvement.
My key research methodologies involve the application of Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis to national and international secondary datasets. I am also interested in the application of the Global Positioning System (GPS) to help us understand exactly where and how people spend their time in the outdoors and how it relates to their health and wellbeing.
